User-centric Quality of Service Management in UMTS
نویسندگان
چکیده
The introduction of UMTS has fuelled the demand for mobile services having a range of QoS constraints. The mobile operator has the means to set network QoS levels but its final aim is to meet user satisfaction while minimizing resource consumption. In this article we study the relationship between UMTS network QoS levels and the user perception of QoS. We report our findings based on a subjective study involving over 100 users for a 2-year period. Our statistical analysis correlates individual QoS parameters with the user opinion on service quality. We determined that the optimum range of bandwidth for web browsing over UMTS is comprised between 64 and 128kbps. We have also found the conditions under which graceful degradation of QoS is not easily perceived by the UMTS user, which suggests various new ways of managing over-the-air resources. Our methodology can also be applied to conduct similar studies for any other service.

A User centric design Approach for Mobile Information and Entertainment Services (MIES) Implemented on a UMTS Testbed
The fast developing mobile technology and the lack of practices makes it difficult to design mobile information and entertainment services (MIES) with a satisfying quality within allocated time and budget. In this paper, the challenge is taken up by following a user centric design approach. A Service Design Approach is proposed that consists of activities and tools and in which users are involv...
متن کاملUMTS medium access control quality of service scheduling
The goal of Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is the delivery of multimedia services to the mobile user. Each different service requires its specific Quality of Service (QoS) to satisfy the mobile user. In this paper, a scheduling concept for the Medium Access Control is presented that satisfies the QoS requirements. To validate the scheduling concept a typical mobile user appli...
متن کاملPricing for Utility-Driven Resource Management and Allocation in Clusters
Users perceive varying levels of utility for each different job completed by the cluster. Therefore, there is a need for existing cluster Resource Management Systems (RMS) to provide a means for the user to express its perceived utility during job submission. The cluster RMS can then obtain and consider these user-centric needs such as Quality-Of-Service requirements in order to achieve utility...
متن کاملLoL@: a UMTS location based service
UMTS is expected to offer a powerful environment for location based multimedia services. We have specified such a service, using the packet switched domain of UMTS and overlaying standards like SIP and OSA/ Parlay. LoL@ (Local Location Assistant) is a showcase for future UMTS services and their requirements. It proposes an architecture for location based multimedia services, including advanced ...
متن کاملA Service Layering Architecture for Inherently Real Systems
Commercial systems that are based on virtual reality tend to find very specific niche areas for commercial applications e.g. military flight simulations, entertainment. Such an approach describes the prevalent application centric approach to the design of virtual systems. An alternative approach involves the separation of the hardware implementation platform from the service applications. By do...
